The Salary of the Deputies

Securing Independence

Member of Parliament during a plenary session

Salaries for Members of Parliament, also called diets, are meant to assure the independence of the deputies. Each parliamentarian receives a taxable salary of 5,125 EUR per month. The President and his two Vice-Presidents receive higher salaries than the deputies.

To compensate for expenses accrueing from working in the home district (for example, for office materials and postage) each deputy receives a monthly average amount of 998 EUR. The per diem average amounts to 424 EUR, and transportation costs - depending on the distance of residence from Stuttgart - are covered by between 355 to 891 EUR per month.

The economic security of parliamentarians requires an appropriate retirement and old age provision and a compensation for other professional and career changes. After ten years as member of Parliament, each deputy is covered and provided for by a Parliament plan payable upon reaching the age of 63 years.
